Jeff,

I hope you have a revision number control. The PCB must be referenced in the BOM, so your PCB must have a part number and this part number should ideally include the rev number.

Avoid referencing the PCBs through drawing numbers that are different from the BOM part number.

All the gerber files would have the part number in the name, so instead of producing gerbers called "copper 1.gbr", "mask bottom.gbr", etc, the files would be called "210-3336-02 power 1.gbr", where -02 is the rev number. Same for the cad files used for machine programming.

More and more machine programming systems used the full PCB Database, in ASCII format, instead of the meager xy files. So don't forget to generate this one also. If the CM is not using it now, they will surely be using it next week.

It is very good practice to give to the PCB part numbers that are very close to the one of the assembled product. This makes life a lot easier for buyers and production people. For instance: Assy numbers always have the structure 210-333444-02 and the PCBs are always 220-333444-02.

Good luck,

Ioan

Subject: [DC] Fabrication Data

Help! We are trying to identify a "BEST PRACTICE" for managing and
controlling the cam data package for production PCB. Currently our
gerber data, IPC-D-356 netlist and fabrication drawings (single image
and array) are zipped and a text file listing with date/time stamp info
is attached and released into our CM system. Are others placing this
data under release control or is there a better way to manage it?
