Carl: To do it correctly it's a no brainer if you thoroughly understand
electroplating, have access to multiple plating and cleaning chemistries,
various anodes and a variable DC power source. There are also issues with
things like cyanide and acids.

To do it right you are going to have to apply a copper strike plate, nickel
overplate, then gold plate with associated cleaning and activation steps
along the way. I have successfully done this both in the lab and in
production many times but if you don't know what you're doing you'll end up
with a mess.

There are some other short cut process where you can put a thin layer of
gold directly over the silver but it doesn't look as good and will dissipate
over time. Something you probably wouldn't want of a 50th anniversary gift
with your name on it.

My advice would be to contact one of the decorative plating shops in the
Portland Oregon area.

Good Luck

Subject: [TN] Off Topic Request . . .

I need to gold plate a "silver" half dollar for a 50th (golden) wedding
anniversary gift. Is there an easy way to do this? Is there anything that
I should watch out for, or is this a "no-brainer" simple process? I am
located in the Pacific Northwest.
Thanks,
Carl
