Lou,

Those lab coats have conductive fibres woven in (you can see them under a microscope) however the base fabric is not conductive, thereby giving you the readings you get. 

The operating principal of said coats are to form a "faraday cage" around the wearer so surface static charges created by clothing are "kept inside", and not allowed to "transmit" a field as one walks by .

Isn't it frustrating how operators manytimes make the final decisions on things?
