The problem is not that that water is ionized; it's that it's a free
radical, the cops forgot to arrest that naughty little anarchist.  Most
water contains ions that do no harm.

Seriously, H2O+ is a dangerous molecule, it tends to rip up other
molecules, including DNA, because it has an unpaired electron. Fortunately,
it has a pretty short half life and will be gone in serveral minutes..  The
question is how long should operators wait before handling material that
has been radiated.

Just bubble air through the water...

The CO2 in the air bubbling through the water forms carboxylic groups that
should neutralize the ionized water...

My first thought was H2O+ is an ion that would be generated in a mass
spectrometer with water as a sample.  I looked up  - H2O ion radiation -
on Google and got better links.  Strong radiation can kick an electron
off
a water molecule, leaving H2O+, a reactive free radical, i.e. a molecule
with an unpaired electron.  Unstable free radicals will quickly react
with
other molecules, and this can have deleterious effects on living
organisms.

The H2O+ in beauty products just means the product contains humectants,
chemicals that  absorb and retain water, such as glycerol.  Retained
moisture improves the appearance and texture of skin and hair.  H2O+
radicals would have the opposite effect.

I have a technical op sheet that deals with E-beam irradiation for space
product that will enter the atmosphere or land on a planet other than
ours,
or will re-enter our own atmosphere after having been elsewhere. In
order
to meet Planetary Protection standards we do the irradiation.
In the document, it describes collateral byproducts of the irradiation,
all
of which I understand except the term H2O+ . When I tried to look up
H2O+
all I could find was beauty products. Does anybody know what H2O+ is,
from
a chemical standpoint?
