Susan,

Thanks, I forgot that the revised test was in the D rev of 840.

Subject: Re: [TN] Acetone Test for Solder Mask

Remeber that the test methods have only how to do the tests and not what
results or values would be acceptable. That info is found in the
specifications.

The solder mask specification IPC-SM-840 changed the basic cure requirements
in 1996 to represent what was used on the board - so the items that
determine cure are isoproply alcohol/water solution, D- limonene, detergent,
methanolamine and water. The samples are also suppose to withstand
soldering processes and be resistant to solder sticking to the solder mask.

There is no differentiation between types of solder mask.

Would recommend that you get a copy of 840. Sometimes when samples are
"rejected" for not meeting a test that is not in specs and standards, there
is a lot of confusion. Of course if you put on your purchase order that the
boards submitted have to meet your acetone test, you would have no legal
problems.
