Hi folks:

I thought the following message explaining the difference between
the Omegameter and Ionograph might be helpful. As you all probably
know, the ultimate in ionic testing is to use ion chromatography.

Mike Burgess is the acting regional Alpha Metals representative
(Ed Hubalik is retired). He clued me in on the differences between
the OmegaMeter, referred to as a static method in IPC-TM-650, and the
Ionograph, referred to as dynamic method in IPC-TM-650.

The OmegaMeter he likens to taking a bath: the soil continuously
increases until no change in conductivity is recorded, at which time
the total conductivity is read and the wash solution is recycled
through the ion exchange resin bed. The curve is sort of a backward Z
the area under the curve is approximately 1/2 base times height. He
admits that the OmegaMeter is kind of like a bath in that it is hard
to get any cleaner than the bath water.

Mike likens the Ionograph to taking a shower, the wash solution
is constantly passing through the conductivity cell and then through
the ion exchange bed. The test is complete when no change in
conductivity above the baseline is detected. The curve has a bell
shape with the area under the curve the more complicated Gaussian
equation. The Ionograph is constantly washing the board with clean
solution. In this respect it superior to the OmegaMeter.
