Steve,
We've been using a Triton IV system for about three years now (Long Island,
though). I used tap water to fill the system and also for make-up water, and
my beds have not deteriorated. As a matter of fact, I'm just changing them now
(although I did switch to the "B" set about a year or so ago). We do low
volume production, averaging 25 boards a day, including hand assembly/rework,
which obviously is a factor in the bed's longevity. Trek (Westek) did evaluate
our water at the time and said it shouldn't be a problem to use tap water for
make-up. I would, as you suggested, use tap water for now and see how things
go. You can always switch to the redundant beds if you run into a problem.
The first set might deplete faster than normal due to the large volume of water
being treated, but the make-up water shouldn't be a problem (again, depending
on the volume of boards ahd how dirty they are).
