Hello TechNet'ers

Palladium. We recently had a problem with some
SMT capacitors and SMTmetal oxide transient
surpressors which had palladium leads. The problem
at reflow was tombstoning and mis-alignments. The
solder appeared grainy and not wetting nicely. At the
board level other SMT devices appeared acceptible.

I called the manufacturer-no names unless you ask
me off line. I was informed that we had somehow called
out the incorrect suffix and were receiving palladium coat
on the leads and not tinned leads. What do we do?

It was recommended by several component manufacturers
that we use a 2% silver content. Being a little skeptical of
changing our finely tuned process we called all the solder paste
manufacturers. We were unconditionally guaranteed that
"no problems" would occur with a 2% silver recipe. We
tried it and it is working great. My manufacturing engineers
are happy and that makes me happy. I don't have to look for
alternate sources.

Good Luck.
