One other problem with solder on gold PWB edge connection contacts is the
added thickness. Depending on the amount and the mating connector design,
the extra thickness of the solder can stretch the mating connector contact
springs, weakening their ability to grip a normal thickness board. This
problem will show up after the soft solder is worn away by multiple
insertions. If the mating connector contacts have been stretched, this
connector will become intermittent when a normal thickness, good board is
plugged into that location.
Removing the solder requires chemical stripping or manual abrasion.
Once the contact is cleaned down to the bare copper, nickel plating is
applied followed by gold plating. As an occasional user, you may have a
problem having the gold plating chemistry in your plant depending the
chemical laws that apply to your area.
There are several companies that do this type of repair. You may want
to check with NCL Repairs located near Manchester, NH.
