     Andy,

If you are looking to find information on gerber file format check out
     the Electronics Interconnects website:

     http://www.pcboards.co.za/gerb.htm

They have an excellent presentation of basic photoplotting priciples,
how gerber vector format works, and what the many standards are for
gerber format. PCB fab houses also usually have some type of
literature handy that they would be happy to share.

Is there a standard (IPC or otherwise) for the gerber file format? If
not, is there any literature / documentation that explains gerber
     files?
