-- [ From: The Zanolli's * EMC.Ver #2.5.1 ] --
In theory, the surface mount connector can be placed on paste and
soldered inline. In practice, this can present some real challenges. The
lead pitch will be .025", not too bad for an IC package, but very tight
for a connector that is almost 2" long and spans the entire width of a
very thin PCB -- and is unsupported by the PCB unless special layout is
considered ( this drives up the cost of PCB because fewer board yield
from the panel). The accuracy of your placement equiptment will be
crucial. The real challenge may come from controlling warping of the PCB
during reflow and losing co-planar relationship between connector leads
and PCB pads.
Straddle mount connectors are far more robust -- something that should
be considered on PCMCIA cards and are less expensive from a purchase
point perspective -- but are a bear to solder.
Teka Interconnection Systems offers solution to straddle mount
processing problems. Straddle mount PCMCIA connectors with solder and
flux pre-deposited on each lead -- the connectors can be soldered inline
without adding any additional solder, solder paste, or flux. Their web
site is: http://w3.bbsnet.com/teka
