Doug,
No worries. One of our engineers contacted our old PC layout guy. The mark was for registration of the silk screen and we no longer use it.

Subject: [External] [TN] square spiral etch pattern found on boards
Esteemed colleagues,
I have been asked about a square spiral pattern of etch on several of our circuit boards. The ends are not connected to anything. I assume it is for verifying copper etch width or etched space width.
Can someone shed some light on these patterns?
