Earl was an equal opportunity user of information.
Followed internet conventions of the time.
I asked how he got permission to use all the IPC documents.
Never got an answer.

I did work with him on the two pictures on the front of the book.
The good example is a Cray memory board.
He had been working on rework process at Celstica in Chippawa Falls, WI.
The Cray PCA assembly business had finally ended up with Celestica.
The site closed in 2004 because it only did $400MM per year, considered too
small.
Always made money even in 2001 and 2002.

The bad example is an ECC ground downlink board.
The BGA was badly soldered and the test engineers found it worked with a
giant c-clamp pressing the BGA to the the PCB.
PCA assembled at EMS. Usual problem of design team not having assembly
knowledge on hand.
Earl supplied design notes, DFX and campaigned for concurrent engineering.
I worked on a PCA for PC's that supplied satellite connections and VOIP.
System worked and was deployed in Thailand.
It was perceived as less expensive than deploying cell phone towers and had
more bandwidth at that time.

Last I heard he was headed to a mountain state casino to beat 2 poker
machines.
Which he did.
Hi eyesight was failing at that time.
Last I heard from him.
