Clearly not all who serve the public can be painted with the same brush.
There are many good people who enter the doors of government. The trick, it
seems to this simple minded observer, is to get them in and out before they
become corrupted by the system.

With respect to scientists and engineers in government, governments often
have scientific councilors, but those folks are also human, and, sadly, can
be corrupted as well by power and money. We have seen, as have those who
preceded us, how governments can show favor those who provide the answers
they want to hear.

The question of ancient Rome "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" ("Who will
watch the watchers?") is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago.

So it goes...

Isn't it perverse though, that we elect them, and have been electing fools

I am an elected official, serving in a local municipal government. People,
I'm certain, think we (the council) are fools.
I think, rather, that we are ill equipped to deal with people's individual
and corporate response to law.
By and large we elected officials are fools compared to the vast knowledge
and talent employed in schemes to generate wealth.

When the upright will of people is thwarted by industry "too large to
fail", hope is hard to find.

Here are two great quotes from Mark Twain on the topic...

"It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no
distinctly native American criminal class except Congress."

"Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But

I repeat myself."

Now you are insulting a noble profession—consulting ;-)

Hi,

That is a simple question. They do consulting. :-)

Hi Bob,
I do not know what you mean by "equating".
Very few bureaucrats/politicians are scientists or engineers [even though
they think they are experts after reading the conclusions from a paper or
two, and even wind up with a Nobel prize].
On the other hand, to our detriment, very few scientists/engineers go into
politics [I guess we cannot stand what is going on there]. That of course,
has not stopped some scientists/engineers from having political agendas
as
the recent e-mail disclosures have shown.

Werner,

That is an interesting rations but I was wondering if you were equating
the politicians with the engineers or scientists? :-)

The score is already very lopsided-bureaucrats/politicians 12 (at least)
:
scientists/engineers 0

Hi all,
have not had time to take part of the discussions for a while. Am
consulting

at another company. They needed help with doing analysis of components.
Boeing is incorporated. I got a list of forbidden materials from them.
Not
many can cope with Boeing's requirements. Only a few in whole Europe!
Now,
I've a question. Has anyone of you been involved in such tough demands,
namely this one...not only they call for checking the finish of every
component type, but all values (!!) within each component family. That
means, that one sample from EVERY resistor value must be analyzed and
reported to Boeing. An incredible job list. Does this make sense?
