You do not need any experience laying out PCB's to take the test. It is
however helpful when it comes to understanding the terms and concepts.
It is really geared towards interpreting IPC specs and applying them to
your design and design practices. If you are on the fence about taking
it, take the cert. Even though I do not design boards as a main source
of income, I still do some designs on the side. My CID certification has
come in handy throughout my career. You would be amazed at the number of
people out there, in the industry, who do not know what CID stands for
or that board designers can be certified.

How much practical experience is recommended before taking the CID exam?
I have designed several 2-layer boards with TH and SMD parts (both
single and doubled sided mounting) and a few 4-layer boards.
