The person with no experience that took the exam when I did, back in
2003, was forced to take it by their employer as they had mandated that
all of their PCB designers be certified.

It comes in handy when you can apply what you learned from the
certification class to other fields outside of design. If I didn't adapt
to the changing market I do not think I would have a job today. I have
only found one perspective employer that knew what CID stood for and
that was because the designer leaving was a CID and the owner wanted
someone with the same credentials.

This almost sounds like a contradiction. It comes in handy - but no one
knows
what it is.
I've been certified (CID) since about 1998. I've changed jobs about 3 or
4
times since then. All doing PCB layout and design related activities.
From my own personal experience I get a 'Huh?' when I mention that I
have a
CID certification for doing design & layout.
I can certainly say that it has not helped my career much - if any.
(Certainly
hasn't helped the level of income.)
My own personal experience, which I would have regardless of the
certification, however, HAS helped.
