Ian,
For this insertion, was it by hand followed by an arbor press or was it 
machine placement/insertion?  What was the failure mechansim?

Doug, we tried to do this when we first started down the press-fit route
but we found issues with coating (acrylic) build-up in holes preventing
proper insertion so now we insert first then coat

Some questions came up here in a conversation this morning and I wanted
to ping the Technet group on the topic.

Do you know of papers that have been published on the topic of inserting
compliant pin / press-fit pin connectors on a conformally coated
assembly? 
 Do any of you do this routinely?  If so, what are the benefits and
disadvantages.
