Zinc plating is also known to form whiskers. They are different than tin
whiskers or lead whiskers. I believe that each kind of whisker takes on
some of the properties of the alloy from which they are formed. I don't
have all of the pictures, but I know there are a lot of tin whisker
photos out there, and tin whiskers are typically nodules at birth, but
then become long, thin brittle spikes. Lead whiskers on the other hand
look like a plate of very curly spaghetti. I know Inge has some great
pictures of lead whiskers that he posted here two or three years ago.
Zinc whiskers that I have seen are similar to tin whiskers in that they
are spikes, but they have branches off of each spike, so they end up
looking like a porcupine on a bad hair day.

Dave,

I've been around plating a lot, especially zinc and I never heard of
zinc
whisker formation.	Are you sure you don't mean tin whisker
formation?

If you really do mean zinc please direct me to some information about
it.
It's never too late in life to learn something new.

Sincerely,

Roger Mouton
