The gold (over nickel) area, as in the case of Au-plated fingers, would
be covered with hi-temp tape, then whole board would be plated.  Used
for boards that would plug into edge-card fingers.  Think of the edge
cards still used in PCs.  With ImAg,  ImSn, ENIG, OSP, and whatever
other chemical dep process is out there, HASL after Au is likely
becoming rare.

I never heard of HASL over gold. I am assuming that the gold is
deposited (?) over the copper pads, then HASL is performed. 

What are the advantages of this finish over ENIG and straight HASL?

Why would a board be finished like that? Just curious.

Gold and silver are deposited by chemical methods.  Solder, both
lead-free and lead/tin, are deposited by HASL.  HASL solder can be
applied after gold finish, as in the case of gold-plated edge fingers.

HASL = Hot Air Solder Leveling
