I suggest going one step further. We've burned ourselves recently by
not verifying the orientation on the data sheet view. On two parts
recently, the mechanical view was from the bottom side and the notation
practically required a magnifying glass to see it. On top of that, the
schematic view was from the top side, so even when we laid a part on top
of the 1:1, we still had the pin numbering backwards. We've put in
place a process to prevent it from happening again, but you'd think
companies would consistently orient the views in their data sheets. We
had one other case where there were two case options and one was
diagramed from the top while the other from the bottom. Somehow, we
managed to catch that one.

Just a little caution about simply adopting a recommended pad
arrangement for a component. I have been burned by using a recommended
pad size and location without first laying a part on a 1:1 plot of those
pads. You may want to use their recommended pads as a starting point,
but I would strongly recommend you confirm those pads against an actual
part before you "call it good". You may want to massage those pads
based on your process and experiences. A 1206 component is very common,
but remember- not all 1206's are the same. Just my $.02 Lenny Carter,

You can find land patterns for SMT devices at two places for free.
