Ioan,

We deal with some metal clad assemblies, they are punched and
v-scored. We singulate them with a piece of steel stock that has a channel
cut out wide enough to fit the material in and deep enough to catch the edge
of the rail. We bend the assembly back and snap off one assembly rail and
then flip it over and remove one PCB at a time. We originally had the entire
array v-scored but due to possible damage to SMT components and the extra
time it took to singulate, we decide that punching and v-scoring was the
most cost effective approach. By going the punch and v-score route we lost
one board in the array and it was still cost effective. This is a low volume
product.

Regards,

Ted

Subject: [TN] Singulation of Aluminum PCBs

Dear Technos,

We are quoting for several products using 0.063" thick Al PCBs, of
course with a thin FR4 topping.

Since they kinda need panelizing, what solutions can I use for
depanelizing?

Some are fit for V-grooving and some require routings.

Pressing with dies would be a solution, but I'm not very sure the
volumes will be there. Any other suggestions?

Also, what are the good panel design practices for this type of
application?

Thanks,

Ioan
