Hi Blair!

When it comes to SMT equipment I agree with Richard, go to the
manufacturer, unless you have someone you can really trust. I've bought
used equipment before and have been lucky. The machines that I have
bought used on the open market were auto-insertion machines, wave solder
machines, and I have bought SMT printers. Fortunately, I had pretty good
luck with everything. I've never bought any used pick and place
machines.

One thing that you need to think about, and plan for if you do find a
decent machine on the open market is support. Over the recent years if
you want to get any support from the OEM, don't be surprised if they ask
you for a "registration fee" before they will give any support at all. I
had to pay fees to both the printer OEM and wave solder OEM before I
could get any support at all from them. One was a one-time fee of $5000
per machine, the other was a $4500 per year fee.

First to the vendor. They often receive new units that were used
temporarily by the customer until a preferred model was available, or
were needed to demo the product at a trade show, or whatever. They
typically provide a new warranty and much better pricing, just because
it is a demo.
Also, they know you are going to buy one if you ask. They will quite
often drop the price considerably in order to sell you a machine on
their books. Use it as leverage.
Next, look at www.Equipmatching.com, as that is simply a central point
for all of the used machine suppliers, private owners who want to sell,
etc. Even the vendors sell their equipment there.

Then look at http://www.easiky.com/.

Then look at all of the rest.

I've got a pretty general question for Technetters out there - where
would you go if you were looking to buy used SMT equipment?

Thanks,

Blair
