I have used IAg as the finish on many telecomm backplanes and switching
blades in a former life. There were no issues that I recall. Once the
board is soldered and the p/f connectors inserted, it does not matter if
the rest of the silver tarnishes as a result of airborne pollutants.
That would all happen after the assembly and reflow are completed.
The p/f connector compliant leads are gas tight. I have never seen or
heard of any issues with that.

I have used ENIG for years on internet switch backplanes in medium
volumes without issues.

While mailing the link though, I also have a question on the suitability
of silver as a finish for backplanes. I am concerned about degradation
of the finish in an environment with high levels of air pollution.

Subject: [TN] Backplane PCB surface finish

Dear Technetters,
Are there some distinct set of considerations that apply only to
backplane PCBs? A question was raised regarding the suitability of ENIG
finish for backplane assemblies. We are using ENIG for other PCBs and so
far, have not run into issues that can be traced back to the ENIG
finish. What are some unique considerations that must be taken into
account when specifying a finish for a backplane assembly?

Thanks in advance,
Amol
