As Haldor has said, most likely to reduce the aperture size for a large area.

I do this a lot on large pads for things like a D2PAK or other transistors with large tabs on.
Putting lots of 0805 pad apertures in a matrix in place of the single big one.

The component gets adequate solder to make the joint when it has all flowed.

 Hi All,

I recently captured on a board, the QFN package has thermal pad whose paste mask is not fully opened but has small square openings as shown below. What the reason to provide this type of pastemask?
