Subject: [LF] reliability data on lead free real life scenario
Importance: High

Oh well you asked for it..

I was looking through the EU web site for the latest round of
exemptions,

Swatch has an exemption request in on the latest round.Why? - Well being
a typically efficient Swiss based company they started to task of RoHS
conversion years ago. After 2 years of intensive research they
implemented the process in mass production in June 2005, they started
shipping and found massive problems with reliability due to tin whisker
growth which caused them to stop shipping. They believe that this will
be a problem with any pitch under 800 microns or around 32 thousandths
of an inch.

They have switched back to tin lead solder, and have applied for an
exemption the document is on public display at the EU web site - here is
the link which I have made into a small link here

If that site overloads don't blame me but do send me comments please
through the site or by response to this email.

Subject: Tin whisker position and China translation

Just saw the iNEMI press release on tin whiskering, tin whiskering is
now official??.... I also found on line the AeA translation of the China
RoHS in the full version which might be a useful document. I have put
the links in the library at <http://www.rohsusa.com/>
http://www.rohsusa.com under the new technical papers banner, so just
click on it, to get to the new papers and links. There are more to go up
there but it's getting a bit late.

I just had a really interesting email from a consultant in New Zealand
who applied for an exemption in 2004 for lead in solders on
environmental grounds - which apparently never made it through the TAC.
I have asked him for permission to put the whole thing on line at the
web site, but take this opportunity to quote a snippet from his e-mail:

========================================================================
====
===========================================

The submission was unminuted in the unofficial TAC minutes but was
minuted in the official minutes of the meeting 10 December 2004. The TAC
overturned it with the comment "entry 19: as this is normal solder it
should not be studied:" This is the only official record of the
submission ever being made. I decided not to pursue further action as
being a small company.............

Curiouser and curiouser

I will advise when I have the full thing on line and will link to his
web site. If you do go to the RoHSUSA web site check out the "my 2
cents"
feature if you want to get your views exposed to a large audience fast.

Have a great day all.

Subject: 100000 hits at Push back - thanks to all

Thanks to all those that have been interested enough to go to the web
site I put up 13 days ago. The site has taken over 100000 hits in that
period.
This week, to enhance the blog section I am putting up two new features,
the first is an anonymous ftp site so that people can upload photo and
text examples anonymously as they find issues without necessarily
dragging the company name into the issue.

The second item is a list server to enable people to discuss the items
on the blog site, make improvement suggestions for the site, and be able
to discuss the defects presented as they are sent in.

If you want to be advised of upload instructions for the anonymous ftp
site, or want to subscribe to the list server when we get it up please
let me know by email or at http://www.rohsusa.com
<http://www.rohsusa.com/>

 It is by the way free, and no we are not making any revenue from this
operation it is a service to the electronics community. If you have not
seen it yet swing by the blog site at http://www.rohsusa.com/blog if
nothing else you might appreciate the English sense of humor..

Kind regards.
