Yeah, we just bought a new Heller reflow oven and we all were joking
about the "Lead Free" decal on the side of it. What does that mean? What
makes it different than the other (older) Heller reflow we have? Nothing
that I know of really...
Our company president told us he wanted to ask for another "Lead Free"
decal to put on the older oven so that they would match...(:^D

LOL, ha, ha, ha! That's a good one. Where have I heard that before?
"Don't worry about the cost, it will eventually drop when everyone
starts buying more":
Lead-free solder paste
Fluxes designed for higher temperatures used in Lead-free
processes
Lead-free capable wave solder machines
Lead-free alloy bars
Lead-free wire solder
Components made for higher reflow temperatures, and free of
those deadly toxins listed in the RoHS requirements
Circuit boards made of materials able to withstand higher
temperatures
and even........
RoHS-COMPLIANT ESD HEEL STRAPS, just $13.00 a pair! Never mind
that they are no different than the $3.00 non-RoHS straps except they
are green. Green, as in the color of money. Environment has nothing to
do with it.
Guess what, pal, historically this has never happened. Welcome to the
world of business!
And no, you probably should not go back to using your old standard 140Tg
laminate, unless you want to add a whole bunch more money to the cost of
conversion in the form of de-laminated or non-reliable (read: scrap)
circuit board assemblies as well!
RoHS, ya just gotta love it!

We have successfullly made the transtition, and are beginning to produce
complaint products.
And that's starting to drive the bean counters into a frenzy. Our new
PCB material spec is calling for 330Td, non-dicy, Z-Axis max, etc... and
guess what, - it costs more than the old 140Tg material. Now they want
to go back to the old material - throw out a year of research and
testing - because they ran a few boards using the old material.
The questions are - is anyone running lead free solder processes using
the old standard 140Tg, in any kind of volume, with any measurable
quality?
How do you convince them that RoHS just costs more, but it will get
cheaper eventually?
