Cadmium plate on screws provides good corrosion resistance,
particularly with salt water, and prevents seizing and galling.
Used a lot in military and marine applications.

Depends what the screw is. In the main we have been looking and zinc
passivated steel screws. Zinc pass traditionally contained Cr VI which
is prohibited under rohs. So all zinc pass needs to use a Cr III
process.
The problem is as has already been eluded to:
Mix of parts in suppliers stock as they source from multiple sources
Getting plating companies up to speed - often means new baths as the old
ones are contaminated.
Easiest solution is to swap to stainless for now.
As for sheet steel products - make sure your supplier and his suppliers
are conversant with the requirements.
No magic wand on this I'm afraid - diligence and research required.
Regards,
Chris

Thanks Tom, Chris for your responses.
I'm not too familiar with the material composition with screws/
fasteners etc.. What materials in screws are actually not compliant?
The problem is some suppliers source from a number of different other
suppliers who in turn may also source from elsewhere also. This makes it
difficult to trace and some suppliers are not willing to say they are
compliant.
Are you or anyone having such issues ensuring RoHS compliancy with
metalworks?

No, most screws that are purchased are not compliant. You would have to
specify Trivalent or stainless.
Your biggest problem is intermixing of compliant vs compliant. If you
call you supplier (Manufacturer) and they say yes for compliant, get DOM
(Date of
Manufacture) for the compliant ones. Most hardware suppliers are not
changing PN#'s, only DOM as tracibility.

Any screws/ fastener experts out there? I'd just like to know whether
screws, fasteners etc ... would be RoHS compliant.
Many thanks!
