Hi Linda,
I assume that the military (in EU countries) is not allowed to specify
tin-lead when the EU-legislation forbids the use of lead for that
specific type of product. Otherwise it would mean that the customer (in
this case: the military) is the one who decides on a product being
exempt or not.

Bev and Dan,
Most items ordered by the military have specifications with it. In
these specifications I would imagine they would call out soldering with
tin-lead. If they buy off the shelf items (no specs) then it would
probably have to be lead free.
Grayland can be a lot of fun or very dangerous.

Daan,
Ah, "grayland" (as opposed to Graceland)! If the military buys an
off-the-shelf Dell, HP, etc. computer than the product is not exempt.
If they buy a missile, it is exempt. Ruggedized items will be tougher
(Pun intended, I'm on a roll this morning). Do they sell them
specifically and only to the military? If yes, then my personal
interpretation is that it is exempt. But once they sell even one to
even, say the US Department of Justice, then I think all bets are off.
Who decides? Ultimately? The EU courts. But do you want to go there?

Subject: [LF] Exemption for military products ?
Hi All,
I heard sereral times on this forum that military products are
exempt
from the ROHS, which to my interpretation of the regulation is not
100%
correct: the ROHS just doesn't mention them as products for which it
is
applicable.
But what if a military product also happens to be a communication
device (let's say a ruggedized cellphone or notepad computer), would
this be treated as an exempt military product, or as a product in
the
category "IT and telecommunications equipment".
And who has the authority to decide on this?
