Pratap makes those absolutist statements intended to alarm but not educate:
But first I must ask if his indictment is only against "industry and US
businesses in general"? Does he believe that non-US businesses walk
with the angels?
Second, I will give him his point on cigarettes. But people have known
for several generations that cigarettes are unhealthy. Even in the 30's
and 40's people were calling them "coffin nails". Perhaps they just
didn't care.
NOBODY has ever said that Viox and Celebrex (or any drug, for that
matter) are safe for ALL people. Nothing is safe for all "people"; not
even peanut butter. But that is not the point. Are we to deny
medications to those that will benefit from them because some people are
harmed by them?
Again, no one ever said that DDT does NO harm to people, animals or
environments. But that is not the issue, the issue is one of balance.
The truth is that DDT is a lot less harmful to people, animals and the
environment than was originally thought when it was banned and it did a
lot of good in preventing malaria, which kills millions each year. The
overwhelming evidence is that a prudent amount of DDT will not harm
animals or the environment but will save millions of lives and much more
suffering.
The idea of industrial nations dumping hazardous waste into the third
world countries is a hoax. Some materials are being sent overseas in
very small numbers relative to the total waste created in industrial
nations; besides it is not WASTE it is recycleable materials. And most
of it is being handled in a very responsible manner despite what the
nincompoops at BAN say. The BAN article, which is the only support for
Pratap's assertion about "exporting waste", was, simply stated,
laughable.
By the way, last time I looked China was a pretty big country,
geographically. BUt as I said, the waste is not goinginto dumps, it is
being recycled.
