Dear All

Please note that under the terms of the RoHS Directive (Article 5.1(c)), the
TAC is required to review the case for each exemption every 4 years. As a
result the revised Annex does not provide any timescales on exemptions.

Note also that the intent is to remove exemptions where possible in the
future as an improved understanding of reliability is gained. For example,
the technical basis of the servers and networks exemption is that there is
currently insufficient data on reliability to use lead-free solders in long
term, high temperature and complex environments - particularly where the
application must be very reliable. However, it is anticipated that this data
will eventually emerge and manufacturers are working on providing this over
the next few years. At some point therefore the TAC hope to be able to
remove this exemption.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Chris

Subject: Re: RoHS treatment of Lead in glass of motorized lenses

This info is from the official "unofficial" meeting notes from the 10 Dec
2004 TAC meeting.

The list of expanded exemptions now includes:

"Lead used in compliant pin connector systems"
"Lead as a coating material for the thermal conduction module c-ring"
"Lead and cadmium in optical and filter glass"
"Lead in solders consisting of more than two elements for the connection
between the pins and the package of microprocessors with a lead content of
more than 80% and less than 85% by weight"
"Lead in solders to complete a viable electrical connection between
semiconductor die and carrier within integrated circuit Flip Chip packages"

Lead in glass, such as leaded crystal, is still being considered.

See the following website for more detail:
http://www.pb-free.info/tac_summary.htm

All members may also want to note that the exemption for leaded solders in
servers, storage and storage array systems has been extended indefinitely.
Good news for a Friday, huh?

Is this exemption written down anywhere? Where might I find out for sure?

        Thanks,

I believe glass containing lead, such as used in optics, is now exempt.
