Just to put things straight, the acidifier in Coca Cola and some other
fizzy drinks is not citric acid, but phosphoric acid. As for
electrolytes, it is the cations that are important, especially sodium
and potassium. For anyone on a normal omnivorous diet, it is not
necessary to add salt to one's food. We add it as a flavour enhancer
and, in cooking, to prevent the natural minerals in food from leaching
into the water. However, a vegetarian/vegan may need a few mg/day of
some additional salt. Potassium can come from fruit and legumes.
