As you know Andy, my company has gone global with multiple design centers in
the US, Europe and Malaysia. We also have manufacturing in the US, Mexico,
China, Europe and Malaysia. We need this global footprint to compete and
survive in this economy. We can provide our customers with 24/7 design
service to get their products to market faster, which they often need. The
US based designers who succeed today not only need the technical skills and
education, but also the communication skills and flexibility to work with
the designers in other nations.
Immigrants have always been welcome in our workforce, and as long as they
were doing the menial labor, working for lower wages than we would accept,
we didn't mind. On the other end of the scale, there have always been
scientists, doctors, nurses and engineers from around the world who came to
fill positions we could not fill, because we do not educate enough of these
professionals. Remember Werner Von Braun? The difference today is
immigration has tightened up, the economy is truly a global machine, and
good designers can be found in all corners of the globe.
Your company certainly recognized that talent is talent, whether he is
sitting in Dallas or Sydney!

It's very appropriate Pete. This is a small world now, and we need to talk
to each other across oceans and time differences.
I welcome this theme - we need to understand our designer brothers and
sisters around the globe before we can accept that we are not the centre of

Lou, you broach an interesting issue that I was ruminatin' on just the other
day. To everyone: what applications - mil, medical, etc - would y'all insist
SHOULD be designed, manufactured, tested in U.S.? Are there levels of
applications where you feel they should be designed/manufactured/tested
domestically? As I understand it, there are people from other countries than
the U.S. that subscribe to this forum. How do you as designers in Europe,
India, Asia etc react to the feeling in some circles in the U.S. that "our"
jobs (they really don't belong to us, you know) are being "shipped
overseas". I'm not coming down on on side or the other here, I'd just like
to know how y'all feel.

IMHO... It better be written in several foreign languages for foreign
universities. Pcb's will no longer be designed in this country, except for
military applications.

The textbook would have to be CAD platform independent. There are far too
many variations in CAD programs out there to address each one's unique
method of operation. (Actually there is a CAD specific committee that is
investigating CAD certification for specifically requested CAD programs that
want a IPC certification for their operators... I think it is still in
review as a potential area we can help designers with. I'm not sure what the
progress is on that activity at this time... but you are correct in
suggesting the CAD system part of a designer's training should not affect
the content of this book.)
Any good textbook that could be used in a classroom setting should have
reasonable chapter content and exercises and a chapter test at the end of
each section. I have put together a list of chapters that could be broken
out into subsections and perhaps we could get some assistance with content
and review as we go along. This is no small project, but it will be greatly
appreciated and useful for many years to come. I don't think we have all
agreed to take this project on yet as a group, but it is on the table for
discussion. I am afraid of actually how much information there is out there
and finding a reasonable focus for each subject that doesn't overwhelm the
reader but hits the main important points of the topic in sufficient breadth
to give the student good command of the subject... that seems to be the real
challenge.
Our IPC DC study guides for CID and CID+ are helpful in getting a framework
for content, however the format of the 3 day workshop doesn't lend itself to
the semester based classroom situation. I was thinking the best way to
approach this is to break it into separate progressive headings and give
them to different individuals or teams of individuals to work on and then
assemble them and refine them into the final text. What do you think?
