Hi Ken,
Another, more precise, method is laser ablation. With special lasers you can
remove the soldermask and do it only and rather exactly where you want this
done. (the hand/Dremel/eraser method is probably cheaper, but more of a pain
in the you-know-where and less precise.)

We have saved a number of very expensive boards that way and removed only
the mask off the copper area that had to be soldered. It leaves you with a
clean copper area and a small 'ditch' around the pad where ablation removed
some of the FR4.
Contact me off-line.

Subject: [TN] Soldermask on PTH pad???
Importance: High

Technetters,

We have pads of hand soldering locations covered with solder mask making it
difficult to solder. Is there any other way to solder besides scarping the
solder mask (abrasive) and use solder fountain? I am looking for any easy
way to remove solder mask or soldering technique.

Any help will be highly appreciated.
