Draw an "X" Across the Surface Plate.
Using the Height Gage and Gage Block measure the difference (Readings) and
record. At a starting point on the Surface Plate (Use the left Front Corner
as a Ref) Take a reading at every 6".
along the X you have generated on paper .
Your margin of error will give you the wear points
on the plate. To get the greatest margin of error use a rectangle block.
It has the least surface area. Square blocks are larger and may miss a
deviation. You could also use a steel ball. This would be a bit more
difficult but would find the greatest wear on the surface of the plate.

This is accurate as far as measurement goes, not necessarily for a surface
plate.

With your size plate it should take no more than an hour TOPS to calibrate.
If you do it every 24 - 36 months - depending on use you may be much more
ahead of the game. What I have given you is a gross error method only, and
problem a lot cheaper.

Regards,

Randy Bock Sr.
