Years ago we used UV light in a darkened room to look for ring voids and
cracks. The glass fibers conduct the light through out the plastic. Voids
and cracks show up as bright spots in the otherwise dark hole. The UV can be
a health problem so be careful with it or sun burn and melanoma are waiting.

I've seen a specialized eyeloupe before that allow you to look into a
Plated Through Hole to check for gross voids/defects in the hole. I'm
trying to get some info on where to order them.
