Barry,
I first suggest that you get a copy of "Design and Analysis of Experiments"
by Douglas C. Montgomery. A very good text in practical DOE strategies.
Unless you know some of the basics of statistical design, you might craft a
beautiful DOE that tells you nothing. You will be able to come to the
wrong conclusion with absolute confidence.
As far software goes, I use Stat-Ease Design Expert 6. Easy to use and
gives you the elementary statistics and diagnostics I need most of the
time. The other large statistical packages, (SPSS, Systat, SAS) should all
do this as well.
