Eric :
You are absolutely correct, Age should be the last thing a company
is interested in, However in a real world they all do. Face it no company
wants to hire someone that in a relatively short time after they train
them, will retire. An even worse case for a company is when an employee
becomes a long term insurance claim. Many companies just can't see the
benefits are worth the risks.
A smart company would learn to utilize the wealth of experience and
contacts that one can accumulate as one "matures" in any business. I have
seen numerous companies hire these experienced individuals as Consultants.
That way they gain from the years of knowledge , and don't worry about the
long term ramifications. Most of the consultants are happy , because they
have flexible work schedules and they enjoy the added income.
I'm not sure about the U.K. , but on this side of the pond to specify age
slot is discriminatory and a favorite money maker for our large community of
lawyers. Monetary awards routinely exceed 6 figures.! Granted there are
always exceptions to the rule due to regulations and physical constraints.
If a company does they better have a lot of absolute, unimpeachable proof as
to why the age restriction is needed, Or some lawyer is going to be driving
a new shiny Rolls!
