Daan,
I have come across similar problems where the part is not suitable for
automatic handling.
My solution is to encourage/force the designers to submit all potential
components for approval by the production and test departments before they
can be used.
Like a lot of aspects of Design for Manufacture this does place an extra
burden on the designers, but that is better than chucking an unsuitable
design over the wall
to cause problems later. All parties concerned need to be clued up on what
makes up the "works cost".
