Matthew,

There are several schools of thought on this.

The European idea is to crimp a ferrule on the wire or insert it in a
terminal in which the screw does not touch the wire, but rather a clamp
pushed by the screw.

Many American companies, including some of the standards writers, don't mind
the screw on the bare wire. There are those who would tell you that a
soldered wire could heat up to a point where the solder will flow and then
the connection will come loose. My theory on this idea is that if the joint
gets hot enough for the solder to flow then you either have an overheating
connection or overloaded circuit (or possibly a fire?). With any of these
possibilities the end result will be damage somewhere to the product.

Personally I prefer the European approach. It looks better and there is
less chance of cut wire strands.

Just my two cents (ta'pence) worth.

Subject: [TN] Terminating wires, tinned or not?

Hiya gang.... are we all over the flurry of excitement of love letters?
This has only been the beginning....wait till all the stolen password
start getting used...If you've been hit then better change em all quick.

Our system ground to a halt, not because of the message itself, but
because of the anti-virus software measures taken to prevent it
striking...
poignant eh!!

Anyhow......what I want to know is:

When terminating some wires leading from a PCB to a terminal block, what
are the pro's and con's
of soldering the twisted ends or not soldering them?

The wires are 7/0.2mm and 3" long.
Strain relief does not appear to be a problem.
The terminals are KRESS 4 with screw clamps in place.

Personally I do not like putting un crimped or un soldered wires into
terminals as they invariably get a few strands poking out
which can cause problems.

I'd like to tell the assembly people that they should be stripped,
twisted & tinned rather than crimped (which takes longer/costs more).
and would like to be able to back it up (or know "not" to do it) with
more knowledge than little old me got.

P.S. before they are quoted, we do not assemble to IPC specs.

Many thanks :-
