AMEN
One question for those that support p/n by group.
If all those little parts are in the stock room,
and all those tiny components in each group
are grouped together by part number;
(you know those components look very similar),
does it seem more likely that an individual stocking or pulling kits
will mistake one thing for another thing that is right next to it and looks
very similar ?
Seems like I'm always thinking about money (costs).
I bet Bill Gates doesn't think about money.

Subject: Re: [TN] Part numbering system
A good book on the subject is:
"Engineering Documentation Control Handbook" by Frank Watts, ISBN
0-8155-1342-9
His strong recommendation on part number significance is to have a
'minimally significant' or non-significant part number; because
ultimately, over time, any numbering system will break down. Find the
parts by searching on standard descriptive name, modifier(s), and
value(s).
The book has good info on handling revisions, ECO's, BOM's, etc.
