I'm actually off to my native Devon, where the mud is the right colour (red), for a very long Bank Holiday weekend. It'd be handy to have the boys help out carrying everything around rather than the job falling to myself as is usually the case.

Some trips to Dartmoor and the coast are planned, and I'll teach the boys the correct way to apply cream and jam to scones (Cream first then Jam) and hopefully they won't end up too messy afterwards.

I'll probably need a rest after all that and what better way then to lock myself away in my cave in front of the computer with no interruptions from anyone, so I'll be generous and send them on to Bhanu for the remainder of the week as it does seem a little unfair that the Pauli exclusion principle seems to have an extra side-effect in excluding him.

The Element Quiz winner gets the services of our outstanding/amazing gnomes Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week (they have had their vaccination shots and can follow any covid-19 protocols the winner decides).



The Question:

This element is radioactive and eventually decays into Pb metal. This element is found in Welsbach lantern mantles and as a coating on tungsten used to make filaments in light bulbs. This element can be obtained as a by-product of uranium ore refinement. This element's name is derived from a Norse god. What element is being described?



The Answer:

The element is Thorium (Th)! Thorium has a very complex atomic decay series and is used as a "jacket" around the core of nuclear reactors. Thorium derives its name from Thor, the Norse god of war.





The winner of the Quiz is James Head and will get the assistance of the boys for the week. Please let us know what tasks you have for the boys to keep them busy.



Both James and Bhanu Sood both submitted the correct answer at the exact same time stamp but James was listed first so FEQAB named him the winner. I am guessing there is an electron somewhere flying around that has a grudge against Bhanu.



FEQAB also reviewed Doug's submission of "Lokium" and they ruled it invalid. FEQAB discussions with Marvel Comics revealed that Lokium was not one of the six Infinity stones and that the Space stone was used to open the portal in the Avengers movie "Battle for New York".



Also, the IPC SummerCon conference is next week in Milwaukee so no Element Quiz. The boys will be assisting with conference duties (primarily finding Diet Mountain Dew for Doug).
