Good points. I also did CDI in the Navy, F14's. This is kinda how I got into the QC arena.

I'm sure similar adaptations of the same basic practice have been applied
    to military, aerospace, etc., although
I haven't worked in those fields personally.

Two eyes are best!! Not to degrade anyone, but having someone just double-check things is a good idea...does it REALLY take that much time?

Having spent time flying P-3's in the Navy, we had what was called CDI's (Collateral Duty Inspectors). Any maintenance that was performed on the aircraft was inspected by a second set of eyes, not only to make sure the maintenance action was performed correctly, but to make sure they didn't leave any tools behind...

Sure, that is a different field, but I think that first article inspections are necessary, just a second set of eyes, if only to make sure that things are what as intended...

People are not robots (as much as we would like them to be), checks and balances are not unreasonable.

Realizing that humans are in the process, it's not a bad thing that we look over each others shoulder just to make sure...if you know what I mean.

How many of us have thought that we have the process "tweaked-out" to the point that nothing could go wrong, only to be burnt later, because nobody bothered to "check things out"?

Hey! It was dialed in! Nothing should have gone wrong if people were paying friggen attention!!

Granted, but if there was a second set of eyes looking at things, that false sense of security would have been shattered, and the process corrected before there was a bunch of rework built...

As much as I hate to say it (and I include myself), it doesn't hurt to look over your buddies shoulder, it should be looked at ensuring the process.

But often people take things personally...I screw-up as much as everyone else, I'm human like everybody. I really appreciate it when someone spots my oversight.

Having first article inspections in my opinion is necessary...
