When I was still building boards in the early 80's I instituted the following
serialization scheme. We would image a series of "8's" like a calculator
screen onto either the circuitry or nomenclature artwork. The phototool
operator then covered up the appropriate section of the "8's" pattern with
tape or pen, and then proceeded to image the "lotcode" onto the panels.
