Hi Jim-
Several of the Sn/Pb/Bi solder alloys have "hot shortness" problems at
98C (a eutectic melting point). I believe that some information
covering Sn/Pb/Bi alloys will be covered at IPC Expo on Tuesday
morning as part of the NCMS Lead Free technical session. I know of
several Sn/Pb/Bi alloys in industry use (43Sn/43Pb/14Bi the most
prevalent) but they all have use environments below 98 C. I would do
some testing in your use environment to see if reliability problems
arise.

Dear Technet:
A prominent component manufacturer uses a Pb46 Sn46 Bi8 alloy for the balls on
BGAs. Can anyone think of any problems soldering these with Sn63 solder paste?
Any metallurgical or reliability issues?
Thanks
