I have used ink jet in the past (previous employer). Process control for small
size print was difficult, and legibility varied between laminate, finish, solder
mask, legend ink,... and lots from the same PCB supplier.

I have heard of laser marking, and even used it almost 10 years ago. It is
difficult to laser solder mask or legend ink without exposing any copper below
the etch.
