I've always thought that the reason MELF resistors are used was just to
aggravate me, and make me
have to go out and buy special MELF nozzles for my pick and place
machines ;^}
Seriously, I think that their electrical and mechanical characteristics
are more robust than a chip resistor. I don't know that for sure, but
about the only time I see them used are on military products.
