It is just another non-inspectable solder joint where the process needs
to be qualified and then tightly controlled. I have seen these used on
many products, but the process needed to be controlled or problems were
seen. If the process was controlled, they worked very well. I personally
have not seen them used for a long time, and if it were required on one
of my products today, I would attempt to perform some type of X-ray
inspection for process verification purposes.
One thing I did on a harness years ago; I changed the heat shrink tubing
to a higher temperature tubing. Then I made a tool to hold the harness
and the solder sleeve in place and shrank the tubing and reflowed the
solder sleeve all in a single pass through the reflow oven. It was
qualified, it was repeatable (automated), and it was very
cost-efficient.

Subject: Re: [TN] Solder Sleeves

Jean-Francois,

In a former life I had used some of the heat shrinkable sleeves that
containd a band of solder. Typically I used them for soldering a drain
wire to the braid of small coax wires. It stands to reason that if not
heated fully or heated too much you could end up with a defective joint.

It will be interesting to hear what our counterparts have to say on this
topic.

Subject: [TN] Solder Sleeves

Hello Technetters,

I would like to have an expert's opinion on acceptability of solder
sleeves on harness assemblies. I have a few pictures of what I beleive
to be dubious solder flow. Help would really by appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
