Bev - Kenny,

I would offer the following variant to your original thought - Many times I
have taken a large antistatic bag (because that was what was available), and
placed the jar of solder paste, or adhesive, (and lid) into the bag. Then,
taking a nitrogen blow-off nozzle, slipped my hand and lower arm into the
bag while somewhat folding the bag around/over my arm. At this point, I
would depress the blow-off nozzle and purge the bag for an appropriate time
(30 sec ... 60 sec ... whatever ... subject to bag size, etc), letting the
excess nitrogen (and air) purge out along my arm. Near the end of the
purging process I would also place the lid onto the container. Finally,
when done purging, I would tighten the bag's seal around my arm and use my
palm to hold the jar and finger tips to tighten the lid.

I would like to think that I excluded more air than if I had just screwed on
the lid in the open air!!

I would also tend to agree that just blowing nitrogen into a container, will
just as rapidly draw room air into the container with the nitrogen stream.

Do not place head in bag while purging!
If your fingers are not long enough, it is not my fault! :-)

Kenny,
Unless you are Flash (DC Comics) or you put in/out stop cocks on your jars,
this is not going to work.

Steve,

I haven't read all the threads on this subject but I just had a thought
about solder paste life. They have a new product for people that do
woodworking to help extend the life of varnish and paint. It's called
"Nitrogen"! It comes in an aerosol can with a plastic tube like WD40. You
spray a little of it into the can as you put the lid on. Why couldn't you do
the same thing with your shop nitrogen as you close your jar.

Since we don't use solder past, what do I know, but it's just a thought.
