A historical progression of surrogate warfare:

Rugby = Conan era village brawl to get the hogs head across the open 
ground to their home turf while wearing naught but their knickers and 
cleats (aka "boots").

American Football = set piece trench warfare

Association Football (aka Soccer) = Modern warfare w/ no frontlines. 
Sides engaged in running, non-stop battle to overwhelm opponents OODA loop.
