hi,

shore hardness is defined by an astm test method, the no. of which currently
escapes me.  there is a shore 'A' for elastomers (read 'soft' things), and
there is a shore 'D' for harder things like plastics.

you use a durometer which has a dial gauge with a needle that you press into
the material you want to test.  the depth of the penetration is indicated on
the dial gauge.

it is not used (as far as i know) to test the hardness of metals, ceramics,
etc.
